Petite Winter Formal Dresses: The Best Styles for Short Women

Winter formal season is here! And if you are a petite woman, you probably already know what that means.

You find a gorgeous formal dress online. The model looks amazing. You order it, wait impatiently for the box to arrive, put it on and…

There are approximately six inches of dress pooled around your feet.

Wonderful.

For those of us who are 5’4” and under, shopping for petite winter formal dresses can be a challenge. Formal gowns are especially difficult because there is simply more dress to deal with. The waist may hit too low, the bodice may be too long, the straps may fall in the wrong place, and that beautiful floor-length hem may actually be sweeping the floor behind you.

The good news is that being petite does not mean you have to avoid long gowns, dramatic dresses, or glamorous styles. Absolutely not!

The secret is finding a formal dress with proportions that work with your smaller frame.

Why Petite Sizing Matters in a Formal Dress

Petite sizing isn’t simply about making a regular dress shorter.

It’s about proportions.

A well-designed petite dress takes a smaller frame into account. The waist, shoulders, bodice, sleeves and overall length should all be adjusted accordingly.

This becomes especially important with formal dresses.

Think about a fitted gown where the waist falls two inches below your natural waist. You can hem the bottom, but that isn’t going to fix the bodice. The entire dress may still look like it belongs to someone else.

Whenever possible, start with a dress designed for a petite frame. Your tailor — and your wallet — may thank you.

Think Vertically

Here is one of my favorite petite dressing tips:

Think vertically.

The goal isn’t necessarily to make yourself look taller. The goal is to create balance and avoid unnecessarily breaking up your silhouette.

Formal dresses are actually wonderful for this!

A beautiful floor-length gown can create one long, uninterrupted line from your shoulders all the way to the floor. Add a defined or slightly elevated waist and suddenly your legs seem to go on forever.

I’ll take it.

1. A-Line Dresses Are a Petite Girl’s Friend

When in doubt, try an A-line formal dress.

There is a reason this silhouette appears again and again in petite fashion advice. An A-line dress defines the upper body and gradually widens toward the hem without adding excessive volume.

It creates shape without swallowing you whole.

For a winter formal, look for A-line dresses in elegant seasonal fabrics and finishes such as satin, chiffon, lace, or subtle sparkle.

A defined waist is even better. If that waistline sits at or slightly above your natural waist, it can help visually lengthen your legs.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of Floor-Length Gowns

Petite ladies, you can wear maxi dresses and floor-length formal gowns.

I promise.

The problem isn’t necessarily the length. It’s usually the proportion and volume.

Look for a gown that follows your shape rather than one involving yards and yards of fabric. Too much volume can overwhelm a smaller frame.

The ideal length will also depend on your shoes. Generally, you want the gown to nearly reach the floor without dragging or becoming a tripping hazard.

Nothing ruins your grand entrance quite like stepping on your own dress.

3. Try an Empire Waist

An empire-waist formal dress can be another fantastic choice for petite women.

Because the waistline sits higher on the torso, your lower body visually begins higher as well. That can create the appearance of longer legs and a beautifully elongated silhouette.

Just watch the volume.

An empire-waist dress that gently skims your body can be gorgeous. One with enormous amounts of fabric may start wearing you instead.

We want people to notice you first and the dress second.

4. Look for Vertical Details

One little detail can make a surprisingly big difference.

A slit is one of my favorites.

Slits introduce a strong vertical line into a formal dress and reveal some leg as you move. Both can help visually elongate your lower body.

Other vertical details can work beautifully too, including:

• Long seams
• V-necklines
• Long draping
• Vertical pleating
• Asymmetrical details

Your eye naturally follows those lines up and down rather than straight across the body.

5. Choose Your Neckline Carefully

Don’t forget about the top half of your dress!

V-necks, sweetheart necklines, scoop necks, halters, asymmetric necklines and square necklines can all work beautifully on petite women.

A V-neck is particularly helpful when you’re trying to create that vertical effect because it draws the eye downward through the neckline.

Of course, your body shape matters too. Someone with a large bust may prefer something very different from someone with a smaller bust.

There are no absolute fashion rules here.

Try different necklines and pay attention to what makes you feel fantastic.

6. Be Careful With Midi Formal Dresses

I have a complicated relationship with midi dresses.

On a taller woman? Gorgeous.

On a petite woman? Proceed with caution.

The hem of a midi dress typically falls somewhere between the knee and ankle. Unfortunately, that creates a horizontal line across your lower leg — exactly where we are often trying to preserve visual length.

That doesn’t mean petites are forbidden from wearing midi dresses. Fashion police will not be arriving at your house.

Just pay attention to where the hem actually lands on you, rather than where it lands on the 5’10” model wearing it online.

Sometimes a regular-size midi dress will even fall closer to the ankle on a petite woman and effectively become a flattering maxi.

7. Don’t Let the Dress Overwhelm You

Formal dresses have a tendency to get…busy.

Sequins! Ruffles! Tulle! Beading! Giant bows!

Sometimes all on the same dress.

A smaller frame can become overwhelmed by too much fabric, enormous prints or excessive details.

You certainly don’t have to wear a boring dress. This is winter formal, after all!

Instead, consider choosing one beautiful statement element.

Maybe it’s a gorgeous neckline.

Maybe it’s sequins.

Maybe it’s a dramatic slit.

Maybe it’s a beautiful open back.

Let that feature shine rather than having six different design elements fighting for attention.

8. Winter Colors Can Be Gorgeous on Petites

Winter formal gives you an excuse to embrace rich, beautiful colors.

Consider shades such as:

Black • Navy • Burgundy • Emerald • Deep Plum • Chocolate • Silver • Champagne

Monochromatic dressing can be especially flattering on a petite frame because one continuous color avoids visually dividing the body.

But please don’t choose a color simply because someone tells you petite women “should” wear it.

Your skin tone and color season matter too.

A spectacular dress in the wrong color may not do nearly as much for you as a simpler dress in a shade that makes your complexion glow.

9. Finish the Look With the Right Shoes

Your shoes matter!

If you’re comfortable wearing heels, a pointed-toe pump or sandal can beautifully continue the elongated line you’re creating with your dress.

Nude shoes can work particularly well when your legs are exposed because they don’t create a strong visual break.

Be careful with thick ankle straps, chunky platforms and very bulky shoes. They can introduce horizontal lines or visual heaviness at the bottom of your silhouette.

And most importantly:

Buy your shoes before having a long formal dress hemmed!

The heel height will determine where that final hem should fall.

Your tailor will appreciate you arriving with the actual shoes instead of saying, “I think they’re about this high.”

Petite Winter Formal Dress Fit Checklist

Before falling completely in love with a dress, check more than the hem.

Ask yourself:

• Does the waist hit where it should?
• Does the bodice fit my torso?
• Are the shoulders and straps positioned correctly?
• Are the armholes in the right place?
• Does the dress follow my shape without overwhelming me?
• Can I walk comfortably without stepping on the hem?
• Does the dress still look proportional when I’m wearing my formal shoes?
• Most importantly — do I feel fantastic in it?

Find a Winter Formal Dress You Love

Being petite doesn’t mean your formal dress choices have to be limited.

You can wear the glamorous floor-length gown.

You can wear the slit.

You can wear the sparkle.

You can make the dramatic entrance.

The trick is finding a dress that works with your proportions rather than against them.

Look for a properly placed waistline, flattering vertical details, manageable volume and a length that complements your frame. Whenever possible, starting with a petite-sized formal dress can save you from trying to alter a dress that was never proportioned for your body in the first place.

And remember — these are tips, not rules.

The best winter formal dress is ultimately the one that fits beautifully, makes you feel confident, and makes you smile when you look in the mirror.
